TITLE: Net-Acct Insecure Temporary File Creation Vulnerability

SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA12476

VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/12476/

CRITICAL: Less critical

IMPACT: Privilege escalation

WHERE: Local system

SOFTWARE: Net-Acct 0.x http://secunia.com/product/3875/

DESCRIPTION: Stefan Nordhausen has discovered a vulnerability in net-acct, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to perform certain actions on a vulnerable system with escalated privileges.

The "write_list()" and "dump_curr_list()" functions create temporary files insecurely. This can be exploited via symlink attacks to overwrite or create arbitrary files with the privileges of a user executing net-acct.

The vulnerability affects version 0.71 and prior.

SOLUTION: The vendor has issued a patch: http://exorsus.net/projects/net-acct/net-acct-notempfiles.patch
