               Red Hat Security Advisory

Synopsis: Updated glibc packages fix vulnerabilities in RPC XDR decoder Advisory ID: RHSA-2003:089-00 Issue date: 2003-03-19 Updated on: 2003-03-19 Product: Red Hat Linux Keywords: sun RPC XDR integer overflow Cross references:
Obsoletes: RHSA-2002:166 CVE Names: CAN-2003-0028

  1. Topic:

Updated glibc packages are available to fix an integer overflow in the XDR decoder.

  1. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Linux 6.2 - i386 Red Hat Linux 7.0 - i386, i686 Red Hat Linux 7.1 - i386, i686 Red Hat Linux 7.2 - i386, i686, ia64 Red Hat Linux 7.3 - i386, i686 Red Hat Linux 8.0 - i386, i686

  1. Problem description:

The glibc package contains standard libraries that are used by multiple programs on the system. Sun RPC is a remote procedure call framework that allows clients to invoke procedures in a server process over a network. XDR is a mechanism for encoding data structures for use with RPC. Glibc contains an XDR encoder/decoder derived from Sun's RPC implementation, which was demonstrated to be vulnerable to an integer overflow.

An integer overflow is present in the xdrmem_getbytes() function of glibc 2.3.1 and earlier. Depending upon the application, this vulnerability could cause buffer overflows and may be exploitable leading to arbitrary code execution.

All users should upgrade to these errata packages which contain patches to the glibc libraries and therefore are not vulnerable to these issues.

Red Hat would like to thank eEye Digital Security for alerting us to this issue.

The Red Hat Linux 8.0 errata packages also contain a number of bugfixes that are not security related. For details, see the list of bugzilla bugs fixed by this errata or the ChangeLog.

  1. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (.rpm) if your current directory only* contains the desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system.

  1. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla for more info):

76531 - /etc/group breaks when lines longer than 671 characters 77467 - upgrade to RH 8.0 glibc breaks mysql remote connections 81901 - character limit on any line in /etc/group - not to exceed 860 82565 - Commands that access group names fails when NIS group is large 82619 - maximum number of users in group 82645 - SEGV in __res_nquery (/lib/libresolv.so.2) 82662 - regex library handle initialized values and crashes
