The Maze ransomware, previously known as "ChaCha ransomware", was discovered on May 29th, 2019. Its main goal is to encrypt files on an infected system and demand a ransom to recover the files, threatening to release the information on the Internet if the ransom is not paid. It has been observed releasing information as a threat when ransom is not paid, which has caused significant damage to companies. The malware has used different techniques to gain entry, such as exploits kits, remote desktop connections, weak passwords, and email impersonation. It is hard-programmed with protections to prevent reversing and make static analysis difficult. McAfee protects against the threats posed by this malware in all its products. The malware has also inserted messages to provoke malware researchers and showcases active engagement on social media sites.
