Microsoft Windows Graphics Rendering Engine EMF File Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Description

Microsoft Windows Graphics Rendering Engine is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability when rendering malformed EMF image files. An attacker may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level privileges, facilitating the complete compromise of affected computers.

Recommendations

Permit local access for trusted individuals only. Where possible, use restricted environments and restricted shells.
To reduce exposure to local attack vectors, never allow untrusted individuals to have local access to computers.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.
Various memory-protection schemes (such as non-executable and randomly mapped memory segments) may hinder an attacker’s ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.
