Description

Google Android is prone to multiple remote code-execution vulnerabilities. Attackers can exploit these issues to execute arbitrary code in the context of a privileged process. Failed attacks may cause a denial-of-service condition. These issues are being tracked by Android Bug ID A-142602711.

Technologies Affected

  • Google Android 10.0
  • Google Android 8.0
  • Google Android 8.1
  • Google Android 9.0

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.
Use access controls to regulate external access to all services that are not intended to be publicly available.

Run all software as a nonprivileged user with minimal access rights.
To reduce the impact of latent vulnerabilities, run all server processes with the minimal amount of privileges required for functionality.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.
Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of suspicious or anomalous activity. This may help detect malicious actions that an attacker may take after successfully exploiting vulnerabilities in applications. Review all applicable logs regularly.

Do not accept or execute files from untrusted or unknown sources.
To reduce the likelihood of successful exploits, never handle files that originate from unfamiliar or untrusted sources.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.
Various memory-protection schemes (such as nonexecutable and randomly mapped memory segments) may hinder an attacker’s ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.

Updates are available. Please see the references or vendor advisory for more information.
