Description

Apache Xerces-C is prone to a remote code-execution vulnerability. Attackers can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code in the context of the affected application or cause denial-of-service conditions. Apache Xerces-C versions 3.0.0 through 3.2.2 are vulnerable.

Technologies Affected

  • Apache Xerces-c 3.0.0
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.0.1
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.0.2
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.1.0
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.1.1
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.1.2
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.1.3
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.1.4
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.2.0
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.2.1
  • Apache Xerces-c 3.2.2

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.
If global access isn’t needed, filter access to the affected computer at the network boundary. Restricting access to only trusted computers and networks might greatly reduce the likelihood of successful exploits.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.
Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This may indicate exploit attempts or activity that results from successful exploits.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.
Various memory-protection schemes (such as nonexecutable and randomly mapped memory segments) may hinder an attacker’s ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.

Currently, we are not aware of any vendor-supplied patches. If you feel we are in error or are aware of more recent information, please mail us at: [email protected].
