Description

Lenovo Power Management Driver is prone to a local buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to properly bounds-check user-supplied data before copying it into an insufficiently sized buffer. Attackers can exploit this issue to cause denial of service conditions. Due to the nature of this issue, arbitrary code execution may be possible but this has not been confirmed. Versions prior to Lenovo Power Management Driver 1.67.17.48 are vulnerable.

Recommendations

Permit local access for trusted individuals only. Where possible, use restricted environments and restricted shells.
Given the nature of this issue, restrict access to trusted individuals only.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.
As an added precaution, deploy memory-protection schemes (such as nonexecutable stack/heap configuration and randomly mapped memory segments). This may complicate exploits of memory-corruption vulnerabilities.

Updates are available. Please see the references or vendor advisory for more information.
