Description

Redis is prone to a remote stack-based buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to perform adequate boundary checks on user-supplied data. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code in the context of a user running the affected application. Failed exploit attempts may cause a denial-of-service condition, denying service to legitimate users. Redis versions prior to 3.2.12, 4.x prior to 4.0.10, and 5.x prior to 5.0 RC2 are vulnerable.

Technologies Affected

  • IBM Watson Studio Local 1.2.3
  • Redis Redis 2.8.21
  • Redis Redis 3.0.2
  • Redis Redis 3.2.11
  • Redis Redis 3.2.3
  • Redis Redis 3.2.7
  • Redis Redis 4.0
  • Redis Redis 4.0.9
  • Redis Redis 5.0
  • Redis Redis 5.0 RC1

Recommendations

Block external access at the network boundary, unless external parties require service.
If global access isn’t needed, filter access to the affected computer at the network boundary. Restricting access to only trusted computers and networks might greatly reduce the likelihood of successful exploits.

Deploy network intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for malicious activity.
Deploy NIDS to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This includes but is not limited to requests that include NOP sleds and unexplained incoming and outgoing traffic. This may indicate exploit attempts or activity that results from a successful exploit.

Implement multiple redundant layers of security.
Various memory-protection schemes (such as nonexecutable and randomly mapped memory segments) may hinder an attacker’s ability to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.
