                      SGI Security Advisory

    Title: IRIX syslogd vulnerability
    Number: 20020405-01-I
    Date: April 24, 2002
    Reference: CAN-1999-0171
    Reference: CVE-1999-0566

  • — Issue Specifics —

It's been reported that under certain conditions involving a buffer overrun,
the IRIX syslogd can be made to crash. This can result in a potential
denial of service.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

  • — Impact —

The syslogd binary is installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems as part of
eoe.sw.base and is activated by default.

This vulnerability may be exploited remotely, no local account is required.

This vulnerability can lead to a denial of service attack.

These issues have been corrected in IRIX 6.5.10 and later releases.

This vulnerability was assigned the following CVEs:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-1999-0171
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-1999-0566

  • — Temporary Workaround —

There is no effective workaround available for these problems.
SGI recommends upgrading to IRIX 6.5.10 or later.

  • — Solution —

SGI has not provided patches for this vulnerability. Our recommendation is
to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.10 or later.
