Description
Vulnerability Description
Multiple BSD operating systems contain a flaw that may allow a remote denial of service. The issue is triggered when a malicious attacker transmits a large
number of fragmented IPv4 datagrams to fill the mbuf pool on a target system, which will prevent network traffic processing. This will result in a loss of availability for the platform.
Solution Description
Upgrade FreeBSD to 4.3-STABLE or to the RELENG_4_3 security-fix branch dated after the correction date or higher, as it has been reported to fix this vulnerability. In addition, FreeBSD has released a patch for some older versions.
Systems running NetBSD-current dated from before April 17, 2001 should be upgraded to NetBSD-current dated April 17, 2001 or later. Systems running NetBSD 1.5.x systems dated from before April 24, 2001 should be upgraded to NetBSD 1.5.x dated April 24, 2001 or later. Systems running NetBSD 1.4.x systems dated from before May 31, 2001 should be upgraded to NetBSD 1.4.x dated May 31, 2001 or later.
It is also possible to temporarily correct the flaw on FreeBSD and NetBSD by implementing the following workaround: increase the value of the NMBCLUSTERS kernel option in the kernel configuration file, recompile, then install the modified kernel.
It is also possible to temporarily correct the flaw on NetBSD only by implementing the following workaround: compile and install a kernel which has the sysctl(3) variable net.inet.ip.maxfragpackets in the sysctl MIB.
Currently, there are no known upgrades, patches, or workarounds available to correct this issue in the Quantum Snap Server.
