The remote Redhat Enterprise Linux 6 host has one or more packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities that have been acknowledged by the vendor but will not be patched.

  • libarchive: Off-by-one error in the read_header function (CVE-2017-14502)

  • libarchive: NULL pointer dereference in archive_write.c (CVE-2022-36227)

  • The archive_wstring_append_from_mbs function in archive_string.c in libarchive 3.2.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted archive file. (CVE-2016-10209)

  • The archive_le32dec function in archive_endian.h in libarchive 3.2.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted file. (CVE-2016-10349)

  • The archive_read_format_cab_read_header function in archive_read_support_format_cab.c in libarchive 3.2.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted file. (CVE-2016-10350)

  • libarchive 3.3.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (xml_data heap-based buffer over- read and application crash) via a crafted xar archive, related to the mishandling of empty strings in the atol8 function in archive_read_support_format_xar.c. (CVE-2017-14166)

  • An out-of-bounds read flaw exists in parse_file_info in archive_read_support_format_iso9660.c in libarchive 3.3.2 when extracting a specially crafted iso9660 iso file, related to archive_read_format_iso9660_read_header. (CVE-2017-14501)

  • libarchive 3.3.2 suffers from an out-of-bounds read within lha_read_data_none() in archive_read_support_format_lha.c when extracting a specially crafted lha archive, related to lha_crc16.
    (CVE-2017-14503)

  • libarchive version commit 5a98dcf8a86364b3c2c469c85b93647dfb139961 onwards (version v2.8.0 onwards) contains a CWE-835: Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition (‘Infinite Loop’) vulnerability in ISO9660 parser, archive_read_support_format_iso9660.c, read_CE()/parse_rockridge() that can result in DoS by infinite loop. This attack appears to be exploitable via the victim opening a specially crafted ISO9660 file. (CVE-2019-1000020)

  • In Libarchive 3.4.0, archive_wstring_append_from_mbs in archive_string.c has an out-of-bounds read because of an incorrect mbrtowc or mbtowc call. For example, bsdtar crashes via a crafted archive.
    (CVE-2019-19221)

  • Heap-based buffer overflow in archive_string_append_from_wcs() (archive_string.c) in libarchive-3.4.1dev allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write in heap memory resulting into a crash) via a crafted archive file. NOTE: this only affects users who downloaded the development code from GitHub. Users of the product’s official releases are unaffected. (CVE-2020-21674)

  • An improper link resolution flaw while extracting an archive can lead to changing the access control list (ACL) of the target of the link. An attacker may provide a malicious archive to a victim user, who would trigger this flaw when trying to extract the archive. A local attacker may use this flaw to change the ACL of a file on the system and gain more privileges. (CVE-2021-23177)

  • An improper link resolution flaw can occur while extracting an archive leading to changing modes, times, access control lists, and flags of a file outside of the archive. An attacker may provide a malicious archive to a victim user, who would trigger this flaw when trying to extract the archive. A local attacker may use this flaw to gain more privileges in a system. (CVE-2021-31566)

  • Libarchive through 3.6.2 can cause directories to have world-writable permissions. The umask() call inside archive_write_disk_posix.c changes the umask of the whole process for a very short period of time; a race condition with another thread can lead to a permanent umask 0 setting. Such a race condition could lead to implicit directory creation with permissions 0777 (without the sticky bit), which means that any low- privileged local user can delete and rename files inside those directories. (CVE-2023-30571)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied on the package manager’s report that the package is installed.
