Description of the security update for Office 2016: January 11, 2022 (KB5002115)

Summary

This security update resolves a Microsoft Office remote code execution vulnerability. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2022-21840.

**Note:**To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Microsoft Office 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn’t apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (See What version of Office am I using?)

Improvements and fixes

Fixes an issue in which Microsoft Access databases that are stored on a network share can’t be accessed by multiple users simultaneously after you install KB 5002099.

Note: This update fixes the issue for standard UNC network paths and long file names. If the network paths include DFS namespaces, short file names, or mapped drives, we recommend that you install KB 5002138.
