MS16-099: Description of the security update for Word 2016: August 9, 2016

Summary

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS16-099.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Word 2016 installed on the computer.

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains improvements and fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:

• If you open two documents that have the same macro name but different VBProject names in Word 2016, the MacroButton field stops working.

• When you convert a document that has basic line shapes that have different line widths to a PDF or XPS file in Word 2016, the basic line shapes are displayed as having the same width.

• When you try to reply or forward an email message that contains a linked image, Outlook 2016 freezes before the image is displayed.

• It takes a long time to run a macro to implement some revisions in Word 2016.

• This update provides the latest version of OneDrive for Business for Office collaboration synchronization integration. It also enables coauthoring of Office documents that are synchronized by OneDrive in a reliable and high-performance manner. This update lets you use Office together with the latest version of OneDrive for Business for improved online and offline user experiences for all files that are synchronized.

Significant changes to the user experience include the following improvements:
* The ability to quickly open OneDrive synchronized files from anywhere (File Explorer, Most Recently Used list, or websites). This enables Office applications to open the correct file and keeping all changes in synchronization.
* Rich collaboration and sharing experiences.
* Offline edits of synchronized files.
* Auto synchronization of the changes to the cloud and as soon as you are online.
