Microsoft disables Excel 4.0 macros by default to protect from malicious documents. Good news after three decades of macro viruses, Excel Trust Center restricts XLM macros by default, but administrators can block all XLM macros usage. Microsoft discourages use of XLM macros. Attackers abused XLM macros to drop malware families like ZLoader, TrickBot, and Dridex
