2. RISK EVALUATION

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to bypass Multi-Factor Authentication or to compromise the confidentiality of other users’ configuration data.

3. TECHNICAL DETAILS

3.1 AFFECTED PRODUCTS

The following products of Siemens are affected:

  • SINEMA Remote Connect Client: Versions prior to V3.2 SP2

3.2 Vulnerability Overview

3.2.1****USE AFTER FREE CWE-416

Use after free in OpenVPN version 2.6.0 to 2.6.6 may lead to undefined behavior, leaking memory buffers or remote execution when sending network buffers to a remote peer.

CVE-2023-46850 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 9.8 has been assigned; the CVSS vector string is (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).

3.2.2****IMPROPER INPUT VALIDATION CWE-20

When a protocol selection parameter option disables all protocols without adding any then the default set of protocols would remain in the allowed set due to an error in the logic for removing protocols. The below command would perform a request to curl.se with a plaintext protocol which has been explicitly disabled. curl --proto -all,-http http://curl.se The flaw is only present if the set of selected protocols disables the entire set of available protocols, in itself a command with no practical use and therefore unlikely to be encountered in real situations. The curl security team has thus assessed this to be low severity bug.

3.2.3****IMPROPER CERTIFICATE VALIDATION CWE-295

libcurl skips the certificate verification for a QUIC connection under certain conditions, when built to use wolfSSL. If told to use an unknown/bad cipher or curve, the error path accidentally skips the verification and returns OK, thus ignoring any certificate problems.

CVE-2024-2379 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 4.3 has been assigned; the CVSS vector string is (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N).

3.2.4****MISSING RELEASE OF RESOURCE AFTER EFFECTIVE LIFETIME CWE-772

When an application tells libcurl it wants to allow HTTP/2 server push, and the amount of received headers for the push surpasses the maximum allowed limit (1000), libcurl aborts the server push. When aborting, libcurl inadvertently does not free all the previously allocated headers and instead leaks the memory. Further, this error condition fails silently and is therefore not easily detected by an application.

3.2.5****IMPROPER VALIDATION OF CERTIFICATE WITH HOST MISMATCH CWE-297

libcurl did not check the server certificate of TLS connections done to a host specified as an IP address, when built to use mbedTLS. libcurl would wrongly avoid using the set hostname function when the specified hostname was given as an IP address, therefore completely skipping the certificate check. This affects all uses of TLS protocols (HTTPS, FTPS, IMAPS, POPS3, SMTPS, etc).

CVE-2024-2466 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 7.1 has been assigned; the CVSS vector string is (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:N).

3.2.6****INSUFFICIENT SESSION EXPIRATION CWE-613

The affected application does not expire the user session on reboot without logout. This could allow an attacker to bypass Multi-Factor Authentication.

3.2.7****INSERTION OF SENSITIVE INFORMATION INTO LOG FILE CWE-532

The affected application inserts sensitive information into a log file which is readable by all legitimate users of the underlying system. This could allow an authenticated attacker to compromise the confidentiality of other user’s configuration data.

CVE-2024-42344 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 4.4 has been assigned; the CVSS vector string is (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:L).

Siemens reported these vulnerabilities to CISA.

4. MITIGATIONS

Siemens has identified the following specific workarounds and mitigations users can apply to reduce risk:

  • SINEMA Remote Connect Client: Update to V3.2 SP2 or later version
  • For (CVE-2024-32006): Instead of using the TOTP-based two-factor authentication mechanism, consider login with Smartcard/User certificate

As a general security measure, Siemens recommends protecting network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. To operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends configuring the environment according to Siemens’ operational guidelines for industrial security and following recommendations in the product manuals.

CISA recommends users take defensive measures to minimize the risk of exploitation of these vulnerabilities, such as:

  • Minimize network exposure for all control system devices and/or systems, ensuring they are not accessible from the internet.
  • Locate control system networks and remote devices behind firewalls and isolating them from business networks.
  • When remote access is required, use more secure methods, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Recognize VPNs may have vulnerabilities, should be updated to the most recent version available, and are only as secure as the connected devices.
