--------- Begin Update B Part 1 of 5 ---------
--------- End Update B Part 1 of 5 ---------
This updated advisory is a follow-up to the original advisory titled ICSA-20-196-07 Siemens Opcenter Execution Core (Update A) that was published August 11, 2020, to the ICS webpage on us-cert.cisa.gov.
--------- Begin Update B Part 2 of 5 ---------
Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to obtain session cookies, read and modify application data, read internal information, perform unauthorized changes, and obtain passwords of currently logged in users. Should the attacker gain access to the session cookies, they could then hijack the session and perform arbitrary actions in the name of the victim.
--------- End Update B Part 2 of 5 ---------
The following products are affected:
--------- Begin Update B Part 3 of 5 ---------
--------- End Update B Part 3 of 5 ---------
An authenticated user with the ability to create containers, packages, or register defects could perform stored cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks within the vulnerable software.
CVE-2020-7576 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 8.5 has been assigned; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N).
An authenticated user could perform an SQL injection attack by passing a modified SQL query through an input field to the back-end server.
CVE-2020-7577 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 8.1 has been assigned; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N).
Authenticated users could have access to resources they normally would not have. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to view internal information and perform unauthorized changes.
CVE-2020-7578 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 8.1 has been assigned; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N).
--------- Begin Update B Part 4 of 5 ---------
The affected application leaks passwords of logged-in users when handling web client sessions. A local attacker who has access to the Web Client Session Storage may be able to obtain this information.
CVE-2020-28390 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 5.5 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).
--------- End Update B Part 4 of 5 ---------
Siemens reported these vulnerabilities to CISA.
--------- Begin Update B Part 5 of 5 ---------
--------- End Update B Part 5 of 5 ---------
Siemens has identified the following specific workarounds and mitigations that customers can apply to reduce the risk:
As a general security measure, Siemens strongly recommends protecting network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. To operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends configuring the environment according to Siemensβ operational guidelines for Industrial Security and following the recommendations in the product manuals.
Additional information on Industrial Security by Siemens can be found at: <https://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity>
For more information on these vulnerabilities and associated software updates, please see Siemens security advisory SSA-604937
CISA recommends users take the following measures to protect themselves from social engineering attacks:
CISA reminds organizations to perform proper impact analysis and risk assessment prior to deploying defensive measures.
CISA also provides a section for control systems security recommended practices on the ICS webpage on us-cert.cisa.gov. Several recommended practices are available for reading and download, including Improving Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity with Defense-in-Depth Strategies.
Additional mitigation guidance and recommended practices are publicly available on the ICS webpage on us-cert.cisa.gov in the Technical Information Paper, ICS-TIP-12-146-01BβTargeted Cyber Intrusion Detection and Mitigation Strategies.
Organizations observing any suspected malicious activity should follow their established internal procedures and report their findings to CISA for tracking and correlation against other incidents.
No known public exploits specifically target these vulnerabilities.
