ATTENTION: Exploitable remotely
Vendor: Siemens
Equipment: Siveillance VMS Video Mobile App
Vulnerability: Improper Certificate Validation
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow an attacker in a privileged network position to read data from and write data to the encrypted communication channel between the app and a server.
Siemens reports that the vulnerability affects the following Siveillance VMS Video Mobile Apps:
Improper certificate validation could allow an attacker in a privileged network position to read data from and write data to the encrypted communication channel between the app and a server.
The vulnerability could be exploited by an attacker in a privileged network position, which allows interception of the communication channel between the affected app and a server (such as man-in-the-middle). However, an attacker must be able to generate a certificate that results for the validation algorithm in a checksum identical to a trusted certificate.
CVE-2018-4849 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 4.8 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N).
Karsten Sohr from TZI Bremen reported this vulnerability to Siemens.
Siemens has provided the following updates and recommends that all users update to the newest version:

NCCIC recommends users take defensive measures to minimize the risk of exploitation of this vulnerability. Specifically, users should:
NCCIC reminds organizations to perform proper impact analysis and risk assessment prior to deploying defensive measures.
NCCIC also provides a section for control systems security recommended practices on the ICS-CERT web page. Several recommended practices are available for reading and download, including Improving Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity with Defense-in-Depth Strategies.
Additional mitigation guidance and recommended practices are publicly available on the ICS-CERT website in the Technical Information Paper, ICS-TIP-12-146-01B–Targeted Cyber Intrusion Detection and Mitigation Strategies.
Organizations observing any suspected malicious activity should follow their established internal procedures and report their findings to NCCIC for tracking and correlation against other incidents.
NCCIC also recommends that users take the following measures to protect themselves from social engineering attacks:
No known public exploits specifically target this vulnerability. High skill level is needed to exploit.
