Adam Crain of Automatak and independent researcher Chris Sistrunk have identified an improper input validation vulnerability in Cooper Power Systems Cybectec DNP3 Master OPC Server software. Cooper Power Systems has discontinued the OPC server and recommends that customers use the SMP Gateway as a replacement that mitigates this vulnerability.
This vulnerability could be exploited remotely.
The following Cybectec product is affected:
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to affect the availability of the DNP3 Master OPC Server software.
Impact to individual organizations depends on many factors that are unique to each organization. NCCIC/ICS-CERT recommends that organizations evaluate the impact of this vulnerability based on their operational environment, architecture, and product implementation.
Cybectec is a US-based company that maintains offices in several countries around the world, including the United States and Canada.
The affected product, DNP3 Master OPC Server, supports the DNP3 outstation. According to Cybectec, OPC servers are deployed across the energy sector. Cybectec estimates that these products are used primarily in the United States and Latin America.
The DNP3 component in Cooper Power Systems Cybectec DNP3 Master OPC Server incorrectly validates input. An attacker could introduce an unhandled exception, causing the process to crash.
