Summary

The vulnerabilities listed below have been identified in the IBM® SDK, Java™ Technology Edition Java Runtime Environment (JRE) which is installed into the IBM Tivoli Monitoring installation directory (for example, CANDLEHOME). This is an embedded JRE is used by various IBM Tivoli Monitoring components and agents.

Vulnerability Details

CVEID:CVE-2013-1500
Some native internal implementation code in the Java Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) component creates a shared memory segment with world read/write permission. This allows potentially sensitive data to be accessed and modified by a local user. This issue is only exploitable by a local user with direct access to the environment on which the JRE is running.

This CVE affects the Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services (MTEMS) GUI when used to configure IBM Tivoli Monitoring components and agents. The command line utility can be used to instead of the GUI to configure the components and agents. The CVE also affects the portal desktop client.

CVSS Base Score: 3.6

CVSS Vector: (AV:L/AC:L/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:N)

CVEID: CVE-2014-0411
Timing differences based on validity of TLS messages can be exploited to decrypt the session.
The vulnerability does not require local network access or authentication, but a high degree of specialized knowledge and techniques are required. The exploit is not trivial, requiring a man-in-the-middle position and a long time (around 20 hours).

The base IBM Tivoli Monitoring and base agents (those shipped as part of IBM Tivoli Monitoring Fix Packs) are not affected by this vulnerability. Only Java-based agents utilizing JSSE which rely on the JRE in the IBM Tivoli Monitoring installation directory (for example, CANDLEHOME) can be affected. Agents affected will publish separate security bulletins and reference this bulletin for the remediation.

Affected Products and Versions

IBM Tivoli Monitoring version 6.3.0 through 6.3.0 Fix Pack 02
IBM Tivoli Monitoring version 6.2.3 through 6.2.3 Fix Pack 05
IBM Tivoli Monitoring version 6.2.2 through 6.2.2 Fix Pack 09
IBM Tivoli Monitoring version 6.2.1 through 6.2.1 Fix Pack 04
IBM Tivoli Monitoring version 6.2.0 through 6.2.0 Fix Pack 03

Remediation/Fixes

These vulnerabilities affect the IBM SDK Java Technology Edition Java Runtime Environment (JRE) which is installed into the IBM Tivoli Monitoring CANDLEHOME directory. This is an embedded JRE which is used by various IBM Tivoli Monitoring components and agents. This is not the same JRE that is used by the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Browser client or Java WebStart client.

Fix VRMF How to acquire fix
6.X.X-TIV-ITM_JRE_CANDLEHOME-20140901 6.22 through 6.23 FP5 __<http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24038379>__
6.3.0-TIV-ITM-FP0003 6.30 __<http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24036775>__

Note: Customers running IBM Tivoli Monitoring version 6.2.0.x through 6.2.1.x should upgrade to 6.2.2 FP9 or 6.2.3 FP5 and install the associated fix listed above, or upgrade to 6.3.0 FP 3 to address the vulnerability.

Workarounds and Mitigations

For CVE-2013-1500 the following workarounds can be utilized:

Use the configuration command line utility (instead of the MTEMS GUI) to configure IBM Tivoli Monitoring components or agents.
Use the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Browser client or Java WebStart client. when running a minimum JRE: Oracle: 1.5.0 update 51, 1.6.0 update 61, 1.7.0 update 25
IBM: 5 SR16 FP3, 6 SR14, or 7 SR5

Disclaimer

According to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is an “industry open standard designed to convey vulnerability severity and help to determine urgency and priority of response.” IBM PROVIDES THE CVSS SCORES ““AS IS”” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ANY ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL SECURITY VULNERABILITY. In addition to other efforts to address potential vulnerabilities, IBM periodically updates the record of components contained in our product offerings. As part of that effort, if IBM identifies previously unidentified packages in a product/service inventory, we address relevant vulnerabilities regardless of CVE date. Inclusion of an older CVEID does not demonstrate that the referenced product has been used by IBM since that date, nor that IBM was aware of a vulnerability as of that date. We are making clients aware of relevant vulnerabilities as we become aware of them. “Affected Products and Versions” referenced in IBM Security Bulletins are intended to be only products and versions that are supported by IBM and have not passed their end-of-support or warranty date. Thus, failure to reference unsupported or extended-support products and versions in this Security Bulletin does not constitute a determination by IBM that they are unaffected by the vulnerability. Reference to one or more unsupported versions in this Security Bulletin shall not create an obligation for IBM to provide fixes for any unsupported or extended-support products or versions.
