Summary

Apache Log4J is used by IBM App Connect Enterprise Certified Container (ACEcc) for logging when generating a bar file that contains a JDBC connector and when running a Designer flow that contains a JDBC connector. IBM ACEcc Designer Authoring operands and Integration Server operands that use the JDBC connector may be vulnerable to remote code execution due to Apache Log4j (CVE-2021-45046) and denial of service due to Apache Log4j (CVE-2021-45105). The fix includes includes Apache Log4j 2.17.0.

Vulnerability Details

CVEID:CVE-2021-45105
**DESCRIPTION:**Apache Log4j is vulnerable to a denial of service, caused by the failure to protect from uncontrolled recursion from self-referential lookups. A remote attacker with control over Thread Context Map (MDC) input data could craft malicious input data that contains a recursive lookup to cause a StackOverflowError that will terminate the process. Note: The vulnerability is also called LOG4J2-3230.
CVSS Base score: 7.5
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/215647 for the current score.

CVEID:CVE-2021-45046
**DESCRIPTION:**Apache Log4j could result in remote code execution, caused by an incomplete fix of CVE-2021-44228 in certain non-default configurations. When the logging configuration uses a non-default Pattern Layout with a Context Lookup, an attacker with control over Thread Context Map (MDC) input data can craft malicious input data using a JNDI Lookup pattern to leak sensitive information and remote code execution in some environments and local code execution in all environments.
CVSS Base score: 9
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/215195 for the current score.

Affected Products and Versions

Affected Product(s) Version(s)
App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 1.1-eus with Operator
App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 1.4 with Operator
App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 1.5 with Operator
App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 2.0 with Operator
App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 2.1 with Operator
App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 3.0 with Operator

Remediation/Fixes

IBM strongly recommends addressing the vulnerability now by upgrading the operator and any DesignerAuthoring and IntegrationServer operands.

App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 1.4, 1.5, 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0 (Continuous Delivery)

Upgrade to App Connect Enterprise Certified Container Operator version 3.1.0 or higher, and ensure that all DesignerAuthoring and IntegrationServer components are at 12.0.3.0-r1 or higher. Documentation on the upgrade process is available at <https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/app-connect/containers_cd?topic=releases-upgrading-operator>

Alternatively you can update the operator version to 3.0.0 or higher, then apply a set of iFix images for the DesignerAuthoring and IntegrationServer operands. Instructions on upgrading the Operator and applying the iFix images for the Continuous Delivery release are available at <https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6540244>

App Connect Enterprise Certified Container 1.1 EUS (Extended Update Support)

Upgrade to App Connect Enterprise Certified Container Operator version 1.1.5 EUS or higher, and ensure that all DesignerAuthoring and IntegrationServer components are at 11.0.0.15-r1-eus or higher. Documentation on the upgrade process is available at <https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/app-connect/containers_eus?topic=releases-upgrading-operator>

Note: For other versions prior to 1.4 IBM strongly recommends upgrading to a supported level and following the instructions above for the Continuous Delivery versions
