Description: A defect has been discovered in the ClearQuest Maintenance tool that allows a SQL Injection attack when upgrading the user database. This attack requires that an attacker has access to run the ClearQuest Maintenance tool on your desktop and can connect directly to your ClearQuest repositories.

The attack allows arbitrary SQL to be executed against the connected repositories. A SQL Injection attack can result in data corruption and loss.

This attack requires access to and running of the ClearQuest Maintenance tool on a Windows platform and having a direct database connection to a ClearQuest dbset from the Maintenance tool.

This attack does not involve the ClearQuest Web Client, ClearQuest Client, or ClearQuest Client for Windows, or command line tools.

Workarounds and Mitigations

Workarounds:

Do not deploy ClearQuest to the desktops, use the ClearQuest Web client instead.

Run ClearQuest on Linux or UNIX platforms since the ClearQuest Maintenance tool is not installed on those platforms.

Mitigations:

Do not let untrusted users use your desktop applications.

Always provide periodic backups of your ClearQuest dbsets.

Do not reveal your dbset connection information to untrusted users. Place your dbsets on local networks with trusted users.
