Continued efforts to evolve its capabilities have led to new obfuscation techniques and the adoption of a more advanced encryption method. Recent updates reveal a transition from AES-CTR to the ChaCha-20 encryption algorithm for securing network communications. This shift improves security by using a hardcoded 32-byte encryption key, with randomly generated counter and nonce values for each request, complicating decryption for potential adversaries. The malware has also integrated a new local privilege escalation exploit, CVE-2024-38196, which allows it to gain elevated privileges on targeted systems, posing an increased risk to security. Additionally, Raspberry Robin employs invalid TOR onion domains within its command-and-control (C2) infrastructure, utilizing a hardcoded algorithm to dynamically rectify these corrupted domains. This adjustment aims to obfuscate detection measures and make it more challenging for analysts to extract Indicators of Compromise (IOCs). The malware's obfuscation strategies have seen significant advancements. Recent modifications include embedding obfuscated stack pointers that hinder analysis with tools like IDA, resulting in decompilation failures that require manual resolution. Conditional statements within the malware’s code are also obfuscated, complicating the logic analysis during reverse engineering. While the encryption of network data primarily remains consistent, variations in the initial values of the CRC-64 algorithm, which is still utilized, add another layer of complexity by randomizing these values per sample and campaign. Raspberry Robin further complicates detection and reverse-engineering by introducing expiration dates within its binary code, restricting the execution of each sample to a one-week period. This constant evolution underscores Raspberry Robin's persistent threat profile, as it incorporates updated obfuscation techniques, advanced encryption methods, and tactical maneuvers to avoid detection. Despite its relatively low publicized presence compared to other malware families, continued enhancements solidify its status as a significant concern for cybersecurity teams.
