Description
Stack-based buffer overflow in rping in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.51 and 7.53, when used with SNMP (aka HPOvNNM.HPOVSNMP) before 1.30.009 and MIB (aka HPOvNNM.HPOVMIB) before 1.30.009, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service via unknown vectors.

BACKGROUND\r\n\r\nHP Network Node Manager (NNM) is an application suite that is used to\r\nmap out and manage network topography. NNM runs on a variety of\r\nplatforms, including Linux and multiple versions of Windows. For more\r\ninformation, see the vendor's site at the following link.\r\n\r\nhttp://www.openview.hp.com/products/nnm/index.html\r\n\r\nII. DESCRIPTION\r\n\r\nRemote exploitation of a stack based buffer overflow vulnerability in\r\nHewlett-Packard Development Co. LP (HP)'s Network Node Manager could\r\nallow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the\r\naffected service.\r\n\r\nThe vulnerability exists within the 'rping' application, which is\r\ndistributed with the Linux version of NNM. It is possible for a remote\r\nattacker to launch the 'rping' application and trigger a stack based\r\nbuffer overflow.\r\n\r\nIII. ANALYSIS\r\n\r\nExploitation of this vulnerability results in the execution of arbitrary\r\ncode with the privileges of the affected service. On RedHat Enterprise\r\n4, the application is started as the user 'bin'. 'rping' is not\r\ncompiled with compiler protections such as stack cookies or the -pie\r\nflag, which makes exploitation less difficult.\r\n\r\nIV. DETECTION\r\n\r\niDefense has confirmed the existence of this vulnerability in Network\r\nNode Manager version 7.53 for Linux. Previous versions may also be\r\naffected. The Windows version is not affected.\r\n\r\nV. WORKAROUND\r\n\r\nBy default, the webappmon.exe CGI application does not require a user to\r\nbe authenticated. By changing the session.conf file and setting\r\nUserLogin to ON, it is possible to require valid credentials in order\r\nto run. The 'ovhtpasswd' application can then be used to add valid\r\ncredentials.\r\n\r\nVI. VENDOR RESPONSE\r\n\r\nHewlett-Packard Development Co. LP (HP) has released a patch which\r\naddresses this issue. Directly downloadable vendor updates for this\r\nreport are accessible via the iDefense Intelligence web portal\r\n(https://ialert.idefense.com) and the iDefense Intelligence XML web\r\nservice. Information about non-directly downloadable vendor updates can\r\nbe found by clicking on the URLs shown.\r\n\r\n http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/patches\r\n\r\nVII. CVE INFORMATION\r\n\r\nThe Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project has assigned the\r\nname CVE-2009-1420 to this issue. This is a candidate for inclusion in\r\nthe CVE list (http://cve.mitre.org/), which standardizes names for\r\nsecurity problems.\r\n\r\nVIII.
