Description
Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE) library before 7.0 does not properly calculate sizes for unspecified "multiple forms of character class", which triggers a buffer overflow that allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code.

This could allow an attacker to bypass quoting restrictions imposed\r\nby escapeshellcmd() and execute arbitrary commands if the PHP script was\r\nusing certain locales. Scripts using the default UTF-8 locale are not\r\naffected by this issue. (CVE-2008-2051)\r\n\r\nThe PHP functions htmlentities() and htmlspecialchars() did not properly\r\nrecognize partial multi-byte sequences. Certain sequences of bytes could be\r\npassed through these functions without being correctly HTML-escaped.\r\nDepending on the browser being used, an attacker could use this flaw to\r\nconduct cross-site scripting attacks. (CVE-2007-5898)\r\n\r\nA PHP script which used the transparent session ID configuration option, or\r\nwhich used the output_add_rewrite_var() function, could leak session\r\nidentifiers to external web sites. If a page included an HTML form with an\r\nACTION attribute referencing a non-local URL, the user's session ID would\r\nbe included in the form data passed to that URL. (CVE-2007-5899)\r\n\r\nIt was discovered that PHP did not properly seed its pseudo-random number\r\ngenerator used by functions such as rand() and mt_rand(), possibly allowing\r\nan attacker to easily predict the generated pseudo-random values.\r\n(CVE-2008-2107, CVE-2008-2108)\r\n\r\nInteger overflow and memory requirements miscalculation issues were\r\ndiscovered in the Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE) library used by\r\nPHP to process regular expressions. These issues could cause a crash, or\r\npossibly execute an arbitrary code with the privileges of the PHP script\r\nthat processes regular expressions from untrusted sources. Note: PHP\r\npackages shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 did not use the\r\nsystem-level PCRE library. By default they used an embedded copy of the\r\nlibrary included with the PHP package. (CVE-2006-7228, CVE-2007-1660)\r\n\r\nUsers of PHP should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain\r\nbackported patches to correct these issues.\n\n**Merged security bulletin from advisories:**\nhttp://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2008-July/015152.html\n\n**Affected packages:**\nphp\nphp-devel\nphp-imap\nphp-ldap\nphp-manual\nphp-mysql\nphp-odbc\nphp-pgsql\n\n**Upstream details at:**\nhttps://rhn.redhat.com/errata/rh21as-errata.html", "modified": "2008-07-18T05:00:21", "published": "2008-07-18T05:00:21", "href": "http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2008-July/015152.html", "id": "CESA-2008:0546-01", "title": "php security update", "type": "centos", "cvss": {"score": 10.0, "vector": "AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C"}}], "nessus": [{"lastseen": "2019-12-13T06:40:54", "bulletinFamily": "scanner", "description": "Updated pcre packages that correct two security flaws are now\navailable for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.\n\nThis update has been rated as having critical security impact by the\nRed Hat Security Response Team.\n\nPCRE is a Perl-compatible regular expression library.\n\nMultiple flaws were found in the way pcre handles certain malformed\nregular expressions. This could allow an attacker to bypass quoting restrictions imposed\r\nby escapeshellcmd() and execute arbitrary commands if the PHP script was\r\nusing certain locales. Scripts using the default UTF-8 locale are not\r\naffected by this issue. (CVE-2008-2051)\r\n\r\nThe PHP functions htmlentities() and htmlspecialchars() did not properly\r\nrecognize partial multi-byte sequences. Certain sequences of bytes could be\r\npassed through these functions without being correctly HTML-escaped.\r\nDepending on the browser being used, an attacker could use this flaw to\r\nconduct cross-site scripting attacks. Therefore, this\r\nupdate contains version 7.3, with special patches to improve the\r\ncompatibility with the older versions. As a result, extra care is\r\nnecessary when applying this update.\r\n\r\nThe Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project identifies the\r\nfollowing problems:\r\n\r\nCVE-2007-1659\r\n\r\n Unmatched \Q\E sequences with orphan \E codes can cause the compiled\r\n regex to become desynchronized, resulting in corrupt bytecode that may\r\n result in multiple exploitable conditions.\r\n\r\nCVE-2007-1660\r\n \r\n Multiple forms of character class had their sizes miscalculated on\r\n initial passes, resulting in too little memory being allocated.\r\n\r\nCVE-2007-1661\r\n\r\n Multiple patterns of the form \X?\d or \P{L}?\d in non-UTF-8 mode\r\n could backtrack before the start of the string, possibly leaking\r\n information from the address space, or causing a crash by reading out\r\n of bounds. \r\n\r\nCVE-2007-1662\r\n\r\n A number of routines can be fooled into reading past the end of an\r\n string looking for unmatched parentheses or brackets, resulting in a\r\n denial of service. \r\n\r\nCVE-2007-4766\r\n\r\n Multiple integer overflows in the processing of escape sequences could\r\n result in heap overflows or out of bounds reads/writes.\r\n\r\nCVE-2007-4767\r\n\r\n Multiple infinite loops and heap overflows were disovered in the\r\n handling of \P and \P{x} sequences, where the length of these\r\n non-standard operations was mishandled.\r\n\r\nCVE-2007-4768\r\n\r\n Character classes containing a lone unicode sequence were incorrectly\r\n optimised, resulting in a heap overflow.\r\n\r\nFor the stable distribution (etch), these problems have been fixed in\r\nversion 6.7+7.4-2.\r\n\r\nFor the old stable distribution (sarge), these problems have been fixed in\r\nversion 4.5+7.4-1.\r\n\r\nFor the unstable distribution (sid), these problems have been fixed in\r\nversion 7.3-1.\r\n\r\nUpgrade instructions\r\n- --------------------\r\n\r\nwget url\r\n will fetch the file for you\r\ndpkg -i Therefore, this\nupdate contains version 7.3, with special patches to improve the\ncompatibility with the older versions. As a result, extra care is\nnecessary when applying this update.\n\nThe Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project identifies the\nfollowing problems:\n\nCVE-2007-1659\n\n Unmatched \\Q\\E sequences with orphan \\E codes can cause the compiled\n regex to become desynchronized, resulting in corrupt bytecode that may\n result in multiple exploitable conditions.\n\nCVE-2007-1660\n \n Multiple forms of character class had their sizes miscalculated on\n initial passes, resulting in too little memory being allocated.\n\nCVE-2007-1661\n\n Multiple patterns of the form \\X?\\d or \\P{L}?\\d in non-UTF-8 mode\n could backtrack before the start of the string, possibly leaking\n information from the address space, or causing a crash by reading out\n of bounds. \n\nCVE-2007-1662\n\n A number of routines can be fooled into reading past the end of an\n string looking for unmatched parentheses or brackets, resulting in a\n denial of service. \n\nCVE-2007-4766\n\n Multiple integer overflows in the processing of escape sequences could\n result in heap overflows or out of bounds reads/writes.\n\nCVE-2007-4767\n\n Multiple infinite loops and heap overflows were disovered in the\n handling of \\P and \\P{x} sequences, where the length of these\n non-standard operations was mishandled.\n\nCVE-2007-4768\n\n Character classes containing a lone unicode sequence were incorrectly\n optimised, resulting in a heap overflow.\n\nFor the stable distribution (etch), these problems have been fixed in\nversion 6.7+7.4-2.\n\nFor the old stable distribution (sarge), these problems have been fixed in\nversion 4.5+7.4-1.\n\nFor the unstable distribution (sid), these problems have been fixed in\nversion 7.3-1.\n\nUpgrade instructions\n- --------------------\n\nwget url\n will fetch the file for reported that kazehakase, a GTK+-base web browser that\nallows pluggable rendering engines, contained an embedded copy of the\nPCRE library in its source tree which was compiled in and used in preference\nto the system-wide version of this library.\n\nThe PCRE library has been updated to fix the security issues reported\nagainst it in previous Debian Security Advisories. This update ensures that\nkazehakase uses that supported library, and not its own embedded and\ninsecure version.\n\nFor the stable distribution (etch), this problem has been fixed in version\n0.4.2-1etch1.\n\nWe recommend that you upgrade your kazehakase package.\n\nUpgrade instructions\n- --------------------\n\nwget url\n will fetch the file for you\ndpkg -i file.deb\n will install the referenced file.\n\nIf you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for\nsources.list as given below:\n\napt-get update\n will update the internal database\napt-get upgrade\n will install corrected packages\n\nYou may use an automated update by adding the resources from the\nfooter to the proper configuration.\n\n\nDebian GNU/Linux 4.0 alias etch\n- -------------------------------\n\nSource archives:\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1.diff.gz\n Size/MD5 checksum: 29821 9ed08939091d62c63e28dd2448076879\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2.orig.tar.gz\n Size/MD5 checksum: 1377901 439ba54dc27509a2ef518f0efc775acc\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1.dsc\n Size/MD5 checksum: 812 59f2a6ef066de3819891e121b0111b8c\n\nalpha architecture (DEC Alpha)\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_alpha.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 831296 01e7938bbf1336d0c6a8b96645f3e79f\n\namd64 architecture (AMD x86_64 (AMD64))\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_amd64.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 785472 c3eaac04243b72ab3b64458b0052aa3a\n\narm architecture (ARM)\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_arm.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 739870 5952c1fc0c8eaaa521262118d2172736\n\nhppa architecture (HP PA RISC)\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_hppa.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 882844 470611add8502f4a341e8cdef4499f4a\n\ni386 architecture (Intel ia32)\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_i386.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 759278 c679e8a553436a11345bca1bc88df09f\n\nmips architecture (MIPS (Big Endian))\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_mips.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 721080 2cbff04efc16533a2b54c779ed1f04db\n\nmipsel architecture (MIPS (Little Endian))\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_mipsel.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 717176 12c4bbbd600c7d6161a3707634a6017d\n\npowerpc architecture (PowerPC)\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_powerpc.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 769382 6e14ed4f3a1fadc97f5996ff29601a8b\n\ns390 architecture (IBM S/390)\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_s390.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 798436 f956cf4e29625f8d324bc5b2fd7b2300\n\nsparc architecture (Sun SPARC/UltraSPARC)\n\n http://security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kazehakase/kazehakase_0.4.2-1etch1_sparc.deb\n Size/MD5 checksum: 757522 befeaed6fcca5045fda96b8450522768\n\n\n These files will probably be moved into the stable distribution on\n its next update.\n\n- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------\nFor apt-get: deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main\nFor dpkg-ftp: ftp://security.debian.org/debian-security dists/stable/updates/main\nMailing list: debian-security-announce@lists.debian.org\nPackage info: `apt-cache show <pkg>' and http://packages.debian.org/<pkg>\n", "modified": "2008-05-06T18:49:49", "published": "2008-05-06T18:49:49", "id": "DEBIAN:DSA-1570-1:3C287", "href": "https://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/debian-security-announce-2008/msg00146.html", "title": "[SECURITY] [DSA 1570-1] New kazehakase packages fix execution of arbitrary\tcode", "type": "debian", "cvss": {"score": 7.5, "vector": "AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P"}}], "freebsd": [{"lastseen": "2019-05-29T18:34:31", "bulletinFamily": "unix", "description": "\nDebian project reports:\n\nTavis Ormandy of the Google Security Team has discovered\n\t several security issues in PCRE, the Perl-Compatible Regular\n\t Expression library, which potentially allow attackers to\n\t execute arbitrary code by compiling specially crafted regular\n\t expressions.\n\n", "modified": "2007-11-05T00:00:00", "published": "2007-11-05T00:00:00", "id": "BFD6EEF4-8C94-11DC-8C55-001C2514716C", "href": "https://vuxml.freebsd.org/freebsd/bfd6eef4-8c94-11dc-8c55-001c2514716c.html", "title": "pcre -- arbitrary code execution", "type": "freebsd", "cvss": {"score": 7.5, "vector": "AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P"}}], "suse": [{"lastseen": "2016-09-04T11:57:12", "bulletinFamily": "unix", "description": "Specially crafted regular expressions could lead to buffer overflows in the pcre library. He reported an error when processing \"\\Q\\E\" sequences with unmatched \"\\E\" codes that can lead to the compiled bytecode being corrupted (CVE-2007-1659). PCRE does not properly calculate sizes for unspecified \"multiple forms of character class\", which triggers a buffer overflow (CVE-2007-1660). Further improper calculations of memory boundaries were reported when matching certain input bytes against regex patterns in non UTF-8 mode (CVE-2007-1661) and when searching for unmatched brackets or parentheses (CVE-2007-1662). Multiple integer overflows when processing escape sequences may lead to invalid memory read operations or potentially cause heap-based buffer overflows (CVE-2007-4766). PCRE does not properly handle \"\\P\" and \"\\P{x}\" sequences which can lead to heap-based buffer overflows or trigger the execution of infinite loops (CVE-2007-4767), PCRE is also prone to an error when optimizing character classes containing a singleton UTF-8 sequence which might lead to a heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-2007-4768). \n\nChris Evans also reported multiple integer overflow vulnerabilities in PCRE when processing a large number of named subpatterns (\"name_count\") or long subpattern names (\"max_name_size\") (CVE-2006-7227), and via large \"min\", \"max\", or \"duplength\" values (CVE-2006-7228) both possibly leading to buffer overflows. Another vulnerability was reported when compiling patterns where the \"-x\" or \"-i\" UTF-8 options change within the pattern, which might lead to improper memory calculations (CVE-2006-7230). \n\n### Impact\n\nAn attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending specially crafted regular expressions to applications making use of the PCRE library, which could possibly lead to the execution of arbitrary code, a Denial of Service or the disclosure of sensitive information. \n\n### Workaround\n\nThere is no known workaround at this time. \n\n### Resolution\n\nAll PCRE users should upgrade to the latest version: \n \n \n # emerge --sync\n # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose \">=dev-libs/libpcre-7.3-r1\"", "modified": "2007-11-20T00:00:00", "published": "2007-11-20T00:00:00", "id": "GLSA-200711-30", "href": "https://security.gentoo.org/glsa/200711-30", "type": "gentoo", "title": "PCRE: Multiple vulnerabilities", "cvss": {"score": 7.5, "vector": "AV:NETWORK/AC:LOW/Au:NONE/C:PARTIAL/I:PARTIAL/A:PARTIAL/"}}]}
