Description

Overview

OpenSSL is an open-source implementation of the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. There is a buffer overflow on 64-bit platforms related to the ASCII representation of integers.

Description

OpenSSL clients and servers running on 64-bit platforms prior to version 0.9.6e and pre-release version 0.9.7-beta2 contain multiple remotely exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities. These buffers are used to hold ASCII representations of integers.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to the execution of arbitrary code on the system. Exploitation of a server will cause the code to be executed with the privileges of the application or service exploited via this vulnerability. For exploited clients, a remote attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code on the client system with the privileges of the current user.

Solution

Apply the patches provided by your vendors, or upgrade to OpenSSL 0.9.6e. Note that applications statically linking to OpenSSL libraries may need to be recompiled with the corrected version of OpenSSL.
